In 2016 the value of pumps produced in EU member countries exceeded €10 billion. Pump manufacturing is one of the few industrial sectors where Europe continues to enjoy at least parity with, and in many cases superior economic performance to, its global competitors. For many years it has had, and continues to have, a healthy positive trade balance with the other major blocs in Asia and the Americas.

Many of the most important innovations in pump technology have their roots in long-established companies in Europe supported by a range of specialist technical organisations and universities along with financial support from a number of governments.
