Alongside their respective annual meetings, CEIR, Pneurop and Europump recently held a Joint Conference to address and consider the EU’s roadmap for industrial support, as it affects their shared interests.

Under the working title of ‘Sustainability and Decarbonisation: how can the EU’s industrial policy support industry’s efforts?’, the event’s core aim was to assess the European Commission’s assertion, following the latest updates to its New Industrial Strategy, that it will rely heavily on industry to deliver on the major challenges faced by the economies and societies across Europe.

A circular economy is by nature restorative and regenerative and aims to preserve the value and intrinsic quality of products, components, and materials at each stage of their use, encouraging the manufacturer to consider the product lifecycle and how any environmental impact associated with his production and use can be negated.

The pump sector has for many years been at the forefront of industry’s drive for energy efficiency gains, whilst leading the way on all manner of sustainability initiatives and developments. It is against this backdrop that Europump pulled together a series of presentations on the afternoon of Monday 9th May.

Europump, along with 23 other Trade Associations, presented two key recommendations. The first presses the EU to ensure that Free Trade Agreements enter into force as soon as possible and the second urges an expansive EU bilateral trade agenda, to support competitiveness at an international level.

Ahead of its Annual Meetings and Joint Conference with CEIR and Pneurop in Brussels in May 2022, Europump delivered a series of presentations highlighting the value and importance of the circular economy to the pump sector.

Investigating both the environmental and commercial benefits available to industry, through the adoption of good circular economy practices, the afternoon offered an update on the work being conducted by Europump in relation to EU Policy and the wider general approach by industry.

The Seminar took place on Monday 9 May 2022, at BluePoint Brussels.

Speakers included representatives from the European Commission, the pump sector, and other related industries, all of whom will share their knowledge and expertise on the circular economy and the positive contribution it can make to the business of pump manufacture, installation, use and maintenance. Following the COVID induced postponement of the co-located events scheduled for both 2020 and 2021, Europump (the European Pump Association) is pleased to announce that it is again partnering with CEIR (the European Valve Association) and Pneurop (the European Compressed Air Association) to stage their respective Annual Meetings next year in Brussels.

Running across three days, from 9th to 11th May 2022 at the Hotel NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon, the three organisations will also deliver a Joint EU Policy Conference.

The Machinery Directive is unquestionably the single most important piece of legislation for the European manufacturing industry. Since its original publication in 1989, and subsequent revisions up to 2006, it has effectively provided the highest level of machinery safety in the world, successfully supported the Internal Market as well as EU competitiveness, and continuously enabled the industry to innovate and thrive. In this context, it is important that the future legislative framework retains the balance between safety and innovation whilst offering the necessary consistency for manufacturers and users alike.

To this end, Europump, along with seventeen other Trade Associations – the co-signatories - have recently produced and issued a joint statement detailing their collective position in relation to five key areas.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Prof. Bernd Stoffel, who passed away on 8th June 2021.  All those who had the pleasure of knowing him, both personally and professionally, will mourn his passing.  Europump and the wider pump sector has lost a strong, valuable, and committed supporter of many years. 

On behalf of the whole Europump community, our sincere and heartfelt sympathy goes to his wife, his children, and his grandchildren, at this most difficult of times. We will always remember him with fondness, gratitude, and deep appreciation.

The recent ‘Get-To-Know-Each-Other’ webinar, jointly staged by Europump, CEIR and PNEUROP as part of their respective online Annual Meetings, has been heralded a huge success.

Originally conceived as a ‘live’ event to form part of the planned Joint Conference scheduled for May in Brussels to coincide with the three Annual Meetings, the plans were understandably curtailed due to the restrictions brought about by the pandemic. However, the opportunity for members of each association to become acquainted with the others, was deemed to be too important to miss, and so the virtual meeting was developed.

Scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday 25th May, from 14.00-16.30 CEST, this free to attend online gathering replaces the ‘live’ Annual Meetings and Joint Conference, which, CEIR, Europump and PNEUROP were scheduled to hold this May in Brussels.

The ongoing challenges brought about by the pandemic has understandable curtailed the original plans, but keen to provide the opportunity for members of each association to become acquainted with the others, and to gain a useful understanding of their respective priorities, common issues, and opportunities for cooperation, the joint webinar was conceived.

Delivered through a panel discussion with the three Association Presidents, the format of this aspect of the event will provide free-flowing conversation with a range of topics being addressed, considered, and debated.

Last year, the European Commission announced its commitment to delivering on its energy efficiency and carbon reduction objectives through its new Green Deal proposition. This Europe-wide undertaking is of course excellent news and sets out a ‘road map’ for the suggested improvements.   It also presents an ideal time to recall the pump industry’s early and continued contribution to energy savings, which has not only been significant to-date, but also realistic and achievable over the short-term. By way of example, water pumps have the potential of saving 50TWh of electricity across Europe, which is equivalent to the output of five large coal-fired power plants, annually.

On Monday 21st September, a coalition of 40 industry organisations, among which Europump and Orgalim, wrote a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calling for decisive action to solve implementation issues within the EU Waste Framework Directive (WFD), specifically the Substances of Concern in Products (SCIP) database.

The signatories representing a very significant part of the European Economy request urgent resolution of implementation issues in a database designed to support the circular economy as expressed in the European Green Deal. This “SCIP” database is required by Article 9.1 of the updated Waste Framework Directive.

The signatories of this letter ask President von der Leyen to take immediate action to:

=> Postpone the SCIP notification deadline of 5th January 2021 by at least 12 months after the database will be finalised;

=> Conduct a study on the usefulness, feasibility, proportionality and impact of the database, and;

=> Instruct the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to adapt the SCIP database according to the outcome of such study.

ECHA failed to finalise the database development to the required timescale of January 2020, preventing companies from developing, testing and adapting their own systems to meet the January 2021 notification deadline.

Signatories have serious concerns regarding the workability, proportionality and value of the SCIP database, expressed repeatedly for the last two years, but their concerns have not been resolved by the European Commission, nor by ECHA.

Contrary to the EU Better Regulation principles, Article 9.1 was added to the revised WFD during the final stage of the co-decision process without any prior stakeholder consultation or impact assessment. A proper impact study should help shape the way forward to deliver on the EU ambition for a circular European Economy.

On 7 September, we were informed that Europump has appointed a member of the Commission Expert Group on Equipment and Protective systems for use in potentially Explosive Atmospheres (E03672). The main task of the group is to deal with issues in relation to the implementation of the Directive. Europump’s representative in the group is Frank Ennenback, Chairman of our Standards Commission.

As part of its overall remit to serve the Europe-wide pump industry, Europump normally stages its Annual Meeting as a live gathering sometime in May or June. Combining a range of technical, policy and statutory meetings with various social events, it is hosted by one of its member organisations or held in Brussels, and so over the years has taken in some of the key European cities. 

This year, the Annual Meeting was scheduled to take place for the second time in Brussels, but of course the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic thwarted that plan! Instead, the business elements of the Annual Meeting...

Various countries around the world have taken different approaches towards energy usage and possible energy reduction. Across Europe, the Commission has concentrated on components within the Energy Related Products Directive (ErP).

The ErP focuses heavily on the efficiency of the products and the Commission has already implemented legislation to ensure that products with low efficiency are gradually phased-out across Europe. A significant step in the right direction for sure, although new ‘energy efficient’ components may still be required to operate within an inefficient system, impacting hugely on any possible efficiency gains.

The European Pump Association – Europump – has announced the postponement of its 2020 Annual Meeting, due to the various restrictions brought about by the Coronavirus pandemic. Originally scheduled for 22nd-24th June as a co-located activity with CEIR (the European Valve Association) and Pneurop (the European Compressed Air Association), it will now be staged from 24th-26th May 2021.

The Hotel NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon has been retained for both the individual Association Meetings and the Joint Conference, although updates on the proposed agenda will be issued in due course.

Since 1st October 2019, new CCC Certification rules have applied to Ex products being sold and distributed in China, replacing the previous National Production License System (NPLS).  So, with a 12-month transition period in place from that date, the new regulations for Ex product certification and marking will formally come into effect on 1st October this year.

To help ensure that pump manufacturers across Europe are prepared and ready for this rule change, Frank Ennenbach, Chairman of the Standards Commission within Europump is keen to offer this core guidance.

The aim of the EU Eco-Design Directive is to improve the environmental impact of energy-intensive products by optimising their design. Since pumps require a lot of energy, some inevitably fall within scope of this directive.  Better design could significantly reduce their energy consumption. However, considerably more can be achieved if the pump is not viewed in isolation, but as part of the overall system along with its electric motor and controller.

As part of the EU Commission’s ongoing revision to the Eco-Design Directive, pump manufacturers across Europe want to implement the extended product approach (EPA) for water pumps. This would result in not only the pump being covered, but the entire pumping unit, along with the necessary electric motor and control system, falling within scope of the Directive - as is already the case with heating pumps.

CISMA and PROFLUID, members of the French Federation of Mechanical Engineering Industries (FIM), merge and become EVOLIS, a new professional organisation dedicated to mechanical equipment manufacturers.

Europump is looking forward to continuing working with EVOLIS as it has done for many years with its founding member Profluid.

At Europump’s Annual meeting Gala Dinner in Naples, Italy, the Europump President awarded an Award to Europumps’ former President Carlo Banfi who had served the Association in various functions since 1991 and was the headmaster of this Annual Meeting, and to its Council Member Svend Aage Kaae, who was retiring.

This White Paper on “Understanding the Effects of Selecting a Pump Performance Test Acceptance Grade” was produced in cooperation with Europump

At its General Assembly in Bodrum, Turkey, Europump elected Martijn van den Born as its President for two years, in replacement of Kutlu Karavelioglu. Martijn van den Born started his career as a trainee. In 1990 Martijn became Commercial Director at the family business in pump and filter production. In 1994, he became CEO. In 1996 he acquired the company by management buyout. ARBO Pumps and Filters has been a member of the Holland Pump Group over the past 10 years and Martijn became the association’s President in October 2013. At Europump, Martijn is supported by Dr. Soenke Brodersen and Jan Capka, respectively 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents.

At Europump’s General Assembly in Bodrum, Turkey, the Europump President awarded a scroll to Brian Huxley, BPMA, Secretary of the Marketing Commission, in recognition of his excellent and long-standing contribution to and support for the work of Europump.

Together with 124 other European industry associations, Europump has co-signed a Joint Declaration for an ambitious EU industrial strategy. The Declaration reminds of the importance of the European industry, which employs over 34 million people in supply chains comprising hundreds of thousands of SMEs and larger suppliers. These need to be supported if the EU is to  remain a competitive global industrial power. The signatories call on the European Commission to reaffirm its commitment to reaching the target of 20% of GDP from industry. The Commission is also invited to propose an Action Plan to tackle the challenges that industrial sectors are facing.

Europump and Professor (retired) Bernd Stoffel (Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany) have published a handbook ‘Assessing the energy efficiency of pumps and pump units. Background and methodology’.

This handbook represents the decades-long effort of the Europump Joint Working Group on energy-using products. It was officially presented at the Europump General Assembly on 9 May 2015. Upon receiving the first book from the hands of Mr Carlo Banfi, Europump President, Professor Stoffel summarised for the audience that the work consolidates the research that Europump and Darmstadt University of Technology performed to prepare the calculations and methodology that underpin EU Ecodesign regulations. The book also touches upon the important roles of standardisation and the Semi-Analytical Model, which calibrates mathematical calculations with tests.

It is the first book available providing the background, methodology and assessment tools for understanding and calculating energy efficiency for pumps and extended products (pumps+motors+drives). Responding to new EU requirements for pump efficiency and US Department of Energy exploratory work in setting pump energy efficiency guidelines, this book provides explanation, derivation and illustration of Product Approach and Extended Product Approach methods for assessing energy efficiency. It surveys legislation related to pump energy efficiencies, provides background on pump and motor efficiencies, and describes the concept of the Energy Efficiency Index for circulators and single- and multi-pump systems.

At its Dresden General Assembly, Europump elected Kutlu Karavelioglu as its President for two years, in replacement of Carlo Banfi. Since 1988, as a partner and professional, Kutlu Karavelioglu has held executive management duties at the Aydiner Group, mainly in the boards of Samsun Machinery Industries and Layne Bowler companies, both having 50 years of history in Turkey in pump, valve and pipe production. At Europump, Kutlu is supported by Ken Hall and Martijn van den Born, respectively 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents.

For the second time in its history, Europump had to hold its Annual Meeting in virtual format.

The 2021 Plenary Meeting was held on 21-27 May and included:

• A "Get-To-Know-Each-Others" meeting between CEIR, Europump and Pneurop, starting with a Panel Discussion between the three associations' Presidents. In addition to providing a brief overview of their individual organisations and given priorities, the session allowed for common issues to be identified and discussed, included the societal and economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the economic recovery, the circular economy and other environmental policy considerations, as well as the impact of digitalisation across the manufacturing sector, in relation to both production processes and end products. From the discussion, it became obvious that the three organisations have shared many similar interests over the years, and increasingly so around international standards and energy use reduction measures. It was agreed that they could better harvest that expertise by forging closer links and a more collaborative approach to certain activities. Following the Panel Discussion, the Orgalim Partnership Team provided delegates with an update on the latest EU regulatory landscape, which will affect members of all three associations over the coming months and years. The event, which was attended by just under 100 delegates, concluded with an informal get-together for participants to virtually mingle.

• The association's annual Statutory Meetings, including the General Assembly, that elected as President of Europump Vanni Vignoli (see press release). The General Assembly was also the place and time to approve the accounts for 2020 and a budget for 2022, and for the past President Sönke Brodersen to review last year's accomplishments and to propose perspectives for the upcoming period. Participants also heard a presentation by our American sister association the Hydraulic Institute.

• Meetings and updates by the four Standards, Technical, Marketing and SME Commissions.

Europump was represented at the Hydraulic Institute’s Annual Conference by a delegation led by its President Martijn van den Born. The conference was held in St Petersburg, Florida, in February 2019. The event provided opportunities for an in-depth insight into the US industry’s technology and market development and for Europump to present its current and uocoming activities, including its Annual Meeting in Naples in May.

Beyond the Commissions Updates and the General Assembly, the 2018 Annual Meeting included a Joint Policy Conference together with Pneurop on the EU Industrial Policy Strategy (Digitisation, Sustainability, Innovation) as well as an Official Dinner on the occasion of Pneurop's 60th Anniversary. The social programme comprised a visit to the EU Parliament and an "Explore Brussels" Tour.

The 10^th Conference on Energy Efficiency in Motor Driven Systems took place in Rome on 6-8 September 2017. EEMODS is an international conference where policymakers and energy efficiency experts from industry, research labs, universities and standardisation organisations meet every two years to discuss energy efficiency policies and technological progress in electric motor systems (pumps, compressors, fans, drives, and other applications).
On 6 September, the Chairman of Europump’s Standards Commission delivered a keynote speech at the opening plenary session on “Europump’s approach to energy efficiency in pumping systems”.

Europump held its Annual Meeting in Ghent, Belgium from 25 to 28 May 2016.

The programme was hosted by the Agoria pump group, our member association representing Belgium.
